Club History
The Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club was founded in 1953 to foster and further the sport of boating, to sponsor sailing instructions, and to promote the social interests and pleasures of its members. Sailing competition began in 1955 with the formation of two fleets, Star class and Comet class boats. Due to the success of the Club’s sailing programs and the ideal racing conditions on Sandy Hook Bay, the AHYC became the host club of several U.S. Olympic Finals for both the Star Class and the Flying Dutchman Class. Recently the Club has hosted the J/24’s Blue Water Regatta as well as the numerous North American and District Championships.
The Club is located on Sandy Hook Bay in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, within easy reach of the Atlantic Ocean and New York Harbor. From the main club room there is a spectacular view overlooking Sandy Hook Bay with New York City on the horizon. The harbor has extensive facilities: fuel docks, pumpout stations, travel lifts and a launching ramp. Also, the Club maintains a 2 ton dry sail hoist, with 24 hour access. Within walking distance from the Club there are marine supplies and repair shops, a sailmaker, hardware stores, pharmacies, two theaters, numerous restaurants, movies, banks and supermarkets. The Historic Twin Lights Lighthouse and Museum is accessible with local transportation.
Who We Are
Our Club Membership is open to anyone interested in boating and related activities. You do not need to be a boat owner to join. The spectrum of interests ranges from cruising to racing to educational seminars and social activities. Members with boats frequently include members without boats on sails to neighboring clubs and ports. Everyone pitches in on work parties doing routine maintenance and clean-ups.
Social Activities
In addition to Sunday afternoon cocktails, AHYC has regularly scheduled events such as the Fleet Captains Ball, the Blessing of the Fleet and parties to celebrate the holidays: Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July and Halloween. During the summer season there are dock parties as well as numerous activities organized by our cruisers. Informal events and educational seminars are scheduled throughout the year. Club facilities, which include a pool table and small video/book library, may be used for members’ special events by arrangement with the Club Steward. Events are listed on the Club bulletin board and on the monthly calendar sent to all members.

Racing
AHYC offers an exciting yacht racing program to satisfy all sailors, from novice to experienced. Our Wednesday night non-spinnaker races encourage all members to participate. If you do not own a boat, we will find a crew position for you aboard a member’s vessel. Our unique location allows us to offer bay racing as well as ocean courses, the latter using the same waters as the original America’s Cup races. We also have the largest J/24 one design fleet in the bay area, a Junior Sailing program and Special Olympic sailing coached by some of our most talented racing skippers.

Community Service
Atlantic Highlands Yacht club serves as a sponsor and host for the Special Olympics program. As the only sailing program in the Special Olympics in New Jersey, we send teams to the National Games. During the season, special athletes learn to sail and compete on Flying Juniors and other Club boats.
The Club’s Junior Program offers sailing lessons to both Member’s children and children in the community. In addition, for Thanksgiving and Christmas we collect food items that are then donated to our local Food Pantry.
